Slide victims want K10m
The National, Friday 24th Febuary 2012
LOCAL level government authorities in Komo, Southern Highlands, have called on the national government to honour its K10 million commitment for the Tumbi landslide disaster on Jan 24 this year.
Prime Minister Peter O’Neill had flown to the disaster site, at the Tumbi quarry of the LNG project near Hides, a day after the landslide and committed K10 million for the operations.
Reports said more than 60 people were killed.
Komo LLG president Thomas Potape yesterday called on the government to find the money quickly and settle its commitment.
“The prime minister came here and made the commitment at the disaster site in front of community, local, provincial and national leaders.
“He promised the K10 million in front of the villagers themselves, those who have lost family members and relatives,” Potape said.
The National Disaster Centre and Esso Highlands said they had not received the money promised by O’Neill.
