Social media issue

Letters

THE National Constitution guarantees freedom of speech and association for all citizens of Papua New Guinea.
This guaranteed freedom is intended to ensure transparency and accountability of individuals, leaders, the private sector and the State and its administrative institutions.
Social media encourages transparency and accountability which must be preserved and upheld at all times, and by every citizen and non-citizen of PNG.
Regulation of social media will only lead a State-sanctioned anarchy and oppression, resulting in widespread greed, bribery, corruption, bad judgment and decisions and misuse of public institutions and resources by the elected members of Parliament, government officials and institutions and the private sector.
PNG is really struggling with these on-going problems and issues, which are contributing to poor development outcomes of the country.
What is the purpose and objective of regulating social media, as advocated by our Members of Parliament?
In PNG, current legislations have already criminalised misuse of social media and other means of transmission and storage of communication and information.
Use these legislations to prosecute criminal use of social media.
