Social networking seen as answer to dealing with student issues

Many social issues affecting young people can be addressed through the student’s social network, says the leader of a students’ group.
University of PNG Tertiary Students’ Christian Fellowship (TSCF) president Kupana Tamate said the orghanisation was a positive network at the university and it used students to reach other students through the gospel.
“In today’s context, many students are abusing their lives with all sort of things and are not reaching their full potential in life,” he said.
“It is better we students reach out to our fellow students through programmes within the campus.
“Through this organisation we have programmes which we see as platforms to show our fellow students what we are doing and how we are doing better in our studies and other aspects of life.
“We tell other students that through setting the word of God as our foundation we are trouble-free and we are doing greater and better things despite whatever circumstances we have in life,” Tamate said.
He said last week TSCF held a two-day open day for information sharing between the different students’ ministries within the campus and the youth ministries of church organisation in the city.
Tamate said the programme enabled the young people to share what they learnt and talk of their experiences to motivate others.
“We had students from the Student Life Ministry, Young Ministry Alliance, students from the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Lutheran Students’ Association, Vabukori Youths and Corner Stone Gateway Church youths.
“The youths shared and testified on their various experiences and how we can network to address issues affecting young people and students,” Tamate said.
He said they also had a group from the Christian Health Workers’ Association who did a presentation on the work of health workers in the rural areas.
The presentation also showed how they can help improve health services through their profession as health workers and combining that with the gospel to help bring spiritual healing to patients.
