Society aims to address poverty

THE Girls Friendly Society held a walkathon last weekend to raise funds for a campaign to address poverty in the city.
The 60 boys and girls were joined by parents in the walk from Konedobu oval to the St John’s Anglican church in downtown last Saturday.
The group wants to support poor people by ensuring that they have the basic necessities in life such as food, water and clothing.
The members urge disadvantaged and marginalised people to recognise their worth and potential and have a positive mental attitude.
It has a ministry which provides mentoring and awareness to the disadvantaged to address social issues affecting their lives.
The ministry was established after a footage of homeless children sleeping in public toilets was aired on an Australian television station in March last year.
The group plans to hold a corporate dinner in December to raise funds for its Christmas feeding initiative and to open an office in Port Moresby.
