A COMMUNITY group in Morata One, NCD, has just made it easier for themselves to get service and contacts with organisations.

The Awiyana community from Okapa district, Eastern Highlands, launched its first community association called the National Capital District Awiyana Community Association Incorporate (NDC ACAI), which will serve as a vehicle to address their needs.

It formed under the Association Incorporated Act and was incorporated with the Investment Promotion Authority (IPA) on Sept 14 last year.

The aim is to seek possible contracts with the National Capital District Commission (NCDC), government organisations, companies and other stakeholders to provide employment for their members, especially youth groups.

Awiyana community women representative Netie Kumo said women themselves sometimes found it difficult to present their needs to their leaders.

An association of their own will make it easier.

She said the issues included child abuse, rape, unemployment and security for women in the community.

Association president Robby Tawanda said it was time such an association was formed for the people of Awiyana living in Port Moresby to give them an opportunity, especially the youths, to find employment and other income-generating opportunities.

“It’s about time we go in line with what the government is doing at the moment.

“What we are doing here is just the foundation and it is up to the community now to support us to change things,” he said.

“We have only started the association, but your help is needed to support and push it forward.

“It’s time the young people move this and help develop the nation.

“The association also stands committed and willing to strive and achieve objectives in the areas of human development, employee relation, social responsibilities and community values.”
