SOE will affect students

Letters

DURING the parliament sitting last week, the Government has made a decision to extend the SOE for another two months.
This decision will affect students attending tertiary institutions around the country especially boarding students.
The longer they are kept on campus they will cause all sorts of troubles.
Some students may take the SOE as an opportunity for drinking alcohol and partying at their dormitories.
The school administrations should look into this issue and provide ways to help the students.
In addition, social distancing is important to limit the spread of Covid-19 as stated by WHO.
The longer students are kept at school they can be exposed to diseases.
Here are some of the measures the government and school administration should take into consideration.
Provide regular security check and health awareness.
The government should liaise with the Department of Higher Education Research Science and Technology (DHERST) and come up with strategies to help facilitate students’ learning.
A best option would be online lectures (use of moodle)
If the Government allows schools to resume, there should be two sessions of lectures for the same lesson. First group of students to attend a lecture followed by the second lot.
Worse case is cancel the academic year and send the students home. They can stay there until the situation is back to normal and can come back to continue their education.
Education will still be there for us. We have only one precious life and if we lose it we cannot get it back.

  • As educated elites attending institutions of higher kearning, students should use their intellectual capacity to analyse situations critically and make rational decisions. Dont be foolish and act like villagers and urban settlement hooligans. Know what is social distancing and practice it, their is no need for them to be reminded.
