A DINGHY loaded with food and fuel supplies for PNG Defence Force soldiers on operation along the southern border with Indonesia, capsized on Wednesday, South Fly Police commander Supt Brian Kombe says.
Kombe said three soldiers were rescued by boats that had accompanied them and the supplies were also retrieved.
He said the soldiers were headed to Arufi, 46km from Daru island, when the incident occurred.
“The supplies were destined for the Weam border station for soldiers on border patrol. Luckily, the food and the two fuel drums were also rescued,” he said. Kombe confirmed that the food supplies had been brought back to Daru for inspection.
The dinghy belonged to the Western administration and was recovered with its outboard motor and brought back to Daru for repair.
Meanwhile, sources from the Western government said the dinghy capsized because of an inexperienced dinghy operator.
