REGIONALISM divides and is a barrier to fair and equal distribution of resources without achieving betterment of any organisation, PNGDF engineering battaâ€ˆlion commander Lt Col Mark Keru said.
Keru told students from the University of Technology (Unitech) during joint activities at Igam Barracks recently, adding that  team work was vital.
He said through it, irrespective of ethnicity, race, people share knowledge, skills and expertise in various professions to achieve a common goal for the good of an organisation.
“And today, Unitech has broken the barrier after refocusing to utilise PNGDF resources to improve its image to eradicate the regionalism mentality among students,” he said.
As part of student orientation programme, student services organised a combined sports with the soldiers at Igam  which PNGDF academy officer cadet training wing senior instructor Capt Laori Larry themed as “team building games’.
With assistance from senior officers, students were taught to understand how to develop team work, a better player within a team, appreciate what each team member contributes to the team for the good of an organisation and to develop planning ability to become potential future leaders.
“The values and operating principles a person believes that guides one’s action and behaviour in an organisation is crucial because it contributes to organised team effort as a means through team spirit, trust and cooperation among each other to achieve result,” Keru said.
More than 80 first and final year students would not have developed the spirit of “togetherness” had it not been for the persistence and team work displayed during the two-day games.
Larry said teamwork was about harnessing talents of individuals to gain synergy in group effort to share and utilise limited resources.
