PNG Defence Force soldiers based at the Kerowil-Singirok Barracks in Jiwaka will replace a bridge that collapsed at Bunum Wo.
The bridge collapsed on Friday.
Major Andrew Napi told The National yesterday that a new bridge would be built in two days to allow North Waghi MP and Defence Minister Dr Fabian Pok to deliver roofing iron  to the people of Bung 1 at Bunum Wo.
Napi said the soldiers based at the engineering battalion for the Highlands region would do the work.
“We are here to help the community and we will make sure we build a new bridge by Friday, just in time for the minister to cross and see his people,” Napisaid.
Local Jacob Tui said the bridge collapsed when a huge truck carrying roofing iron bound for Bung 1 crossed over the Bongul Creek.
Tui said the bridge was built in 1986 when Philip Kapal was the premier of Western Highlands.
“I did not see it built because I was not born. It is very old. It’s timely that a new bridge is built to serve Waghi Valley Secondary School, Sigri Community School, churches and the people of Bunum Wo.”
Tui said the driver of the delivery truck and some people were injured when the bridge collapsed.
