PEOPLE in Aitape-Lumi district in West Sepik will soon have access to Telikom PNG’s wireless phone service.

This was made possible when Governor Simon Solo presented a cheque for K140,000 last Friday to Telikom to install the service.

The coverage would reach areas in Lumi, giving access to communication and related technology for more than 20,000 people in the district.

Solo said the funding to have this service was secured from K1 million drawn from the national government.

He said it was more important to distribute equally among the four electorates of the province and he  was planning expansion of the service to the other three districts.

Solo said communication was important and as such, the people needed to have the service.

He said he had already provided eight computers to Lumi High School and with the wireless service, students could easily connect to internet.

“They should have the knowledge to operate computers and access internet,” Solo said.

Meanwhile, Telikom’s acting CEO Paul Tevlone commended  Solo for the initiative, adding that wireless also had other value added to it such as internet.

Tevlone said it had proved to work well in remote areas.

Work on the project will start when all formalities were done and Telikom deploys workmen and equipment to the electorate.
