Solve issues surrounding Kundiawa Airport
The National, Thursday 29th of November, 2012
KUNDIAWA Airport has been closed for more than two years.
For some reasons, the National Airports Corporation (NAC) has been tongue-tied on the issue to date.
Last week, the provincial administrator announced that the airport will be reopened in two weeks’ time.
However, I have some doubts as to how the airport will reopen to restore routine flights to Chimbu.
Any maintenance or upgrade should be endorsed and authorised by the NAC.
However, the Simbu administration, without liaising with the NAC, went ahead and contracted a local contractor through the Provincial Supply and Tenders Board (PSTB).
Former governor John Garia allocated K300,000 as a counterpart funding for the project and that was not even enough
for a full-scale work.
We read in the paper last Fri-
day that the total funding for the project amounted to K1.2 million.
And we learned that the contractor has been imprisoned for allegedly misappropriating some of the funds.
I call on Governor Noah Kool and the NAC to investigate and verify the issue and prosecute those who have had their hands immersed in the honey pot.
