Somare commends ESP for peaceful festivities

PRIME Minister Sir Michael Somare has commended the people of East Sepik for an incident-free 35th anniversary celebrations.
Sir Michael said it was good to see people from all six districts in the province converge on the provincial capital, Wewak, to participate over the past four days.
Celebrations began with the flag raising ceremony by East Sepik Governor Peter Wararu on Independence Day.
This was followed by singsings at the Prince Charles Oval, a military parade before the opening of the Michael Somare Stadium and the flag lowering ceremony by Sir Michael.
The commander of the Second Battalion of the Pacific Island Regiment (2PIR) hosted an independence dinner at the Moem Barracks last Thursday evening for the prime minister and his special guests including Member for North Waghi, Benjamin Mul.
The second day saw the closing of the small expo by East Sepik Women in Business. 
Women from various districts came in to Wewak for their three-day gathering where different talents were on display including arts and crafts.
Also played over the weekend was the touch rugby and soccer competition that attracted many young people.
The town also witnessed three days of canoe displays and racing in the picturesque Wewak harbour.
The finale and show stopper was the Sepik Ironman triathlon competition that attracted thousands of spectators and 212 entrants in the four-man running, swimming and cycling event.
