Sonk makes a pledge to save gas fields in Western

Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited managing director Wapu Sonk says the commercialisation of the stranded assets in Western is key to renewing the gas exploration interest in the province.
Sonk said they were determined to ensure that several gas fields in PNG, especially in Western, would not remain stranded.
“We want these fields to be developed and we want exploration in this highly prospective areas to restart, and we will promote this,” Sonk said.
Sonk said this would be done through promoting the third party access policy to be implemented so that KPHL could have access to the infrastructure built by the international oil and gas companies developing the big projects.
“We believe that the commercialisation of the current stranded assets in Western are key to renewing exploration in the province and surrounding areas.
“We are encouraged to see the current interest in the offshore basins in the Gulf of Papua and we strongly support these efforts.
“Moving forward, our downstream strategic direction has seen the engagement of expert resources to review how pipeline network can bring optimal fields development for the nation as a whole.”
Sonk said studies targeted routes, capacities, costs and risk mitigation to ensure a best solution for the nation was realised.
