EASTERN Highlands Governor Julie Soso has presented more than K290,000 to government agencies and private organisations in the province.

The highest amount of K120,000 was presented to the Goroka Show Society while K90,673 went to Bihute Jail, outside Goroka town, and the Evangelical Brotherhood Church (EBC) education services received K50,000.

Another K1 million allocated for the EBC Kassam-Yonki health centre will be reserved with the Provincial Health Authority (PHA) to source further funding to upgrade to hospital status.

Salem Training School, which specialises in training Sunday school teachers, and the Eastern Highlands Youth Council were given K10,000 each, while Goroka Women in Business and JK McCarthy Museum received K5,000 each.

The Lapilo Resource Centre received K2,500 and Eastern Highlands Students Association at the University of Goroka were given K2,000.

Soso said the Goroka Show was an event that the provincial government would continue to support.

Bihute jail commander Simon Larken said they would use the funds to rehabilitate their officers’ houses.

Soso urged JK McCarthy Museum to use the funds to rehabilitate a small Soso Subi Gallery inside the museum named after her late father.

Representatives of the recipient organisations thanked Soso for the financial support and vowed to put the money to good use.
