Southern Highlands teachers get SBC training

A TOTAL of 120 teachers in Imbonggu, Southern Highlands, have attended a week-long in-service training on standards-based curriculum (SBC) and transition away from the outcomes-based education (OBE) system.
The training was held at Kaupena last week.
Southern Highlands is the last province to rollout the SBC.
The in-service prepares teachers to cope with changes in implementing the curriculum.
Trainer Michael Mendep said SBC should be implemented properly.
“These teachers who are in this in-service will play a vital role to ensure that the standard based curriculum is successfully implemented in each respective school,” he said.
“I want to acknowledge the government structural and curriculum reformation that is going to turn this country around in the years to come.
“As a trainer in Kaupena for Imbonggu proper cluster group, teachers will now be having a closely guided curriculum from teaching to learning and assessing.”
Mendep said SBC would take prominence when fully implemented next year and onwards.
Southern Highlands primary school inspector Elizabeth Soka said the government’s vision was to improve the literacy rate in the country and teachers were the key people in realising the dream.
“Once you leave this training facility, I want you to return to your schools and do what you can to help your schools and improve students’ learning,” she said.
Soka said the new curriculum would be challenging but it needed time and effort to fully rollout the programme.
