THE Southern Football Club in the Manubada Soccer Association of Vabukori village, Moresby South electorate, have extended their lead in the men’s competition after beating Kuni Bombers 1-0 at the weekend.

With the competition well into its second round, teams are set on improving their performance in the village better known for volleyball.

Secretary Ima Kelly said their intention was to unite the village through soccer.

“It is encouraging to see six teams registering to compete,” he said.

The games are played in four divisions  — the Under-10, U15, U21 and the open men’s and women’s.

Ima said the skill levels of teams had improved since the preseason.

He said this was evident seeing last year’s champions Kulaubiga had been pushed down to fifth place on the point ladder.

“When the competition started last year, no one was able to match Kulaubiga.

“Now we have other teams coming up and the best example is Southern, who are first on the points ladder,” he said.

Kulaugiba patron and coach Allan Abraham said he was pleased to see other teams to rise up and be competitive.

“Seeing many teams turn out good  performances bodes well for the competition,” he said.
