SELECTED players from the Port Moresby Suburban Rugby League are in training at the Kone Tigers Oval in Waigani for the Southern Zone trials later this month.
The Southern Confederate of the PNG Rugby Football League has confirmed that the trials will be held at Kaugere in Port Moresby from July 18-21.
The Port Moresby suburban league has selected a women’s squad as well men’s Under-20 and A grade sides.
League vice-president Noel Mapa said training started yesterday.
Mapa said the first trial matches for all divisions would be held this weekend at the Kone Tigers Oval.
He added that all normal competition matches have been called off due to this trial match.
“Selections for the all three division have not been finalised but those who have seen their names on the lists should turn up for the training.
“We are rushing things up because we only have less than two weeks remaining before the Southern Region trials,” Mapa said.
Meanwhile, Southern Confederation director Gwaibo Mairi said they were hoping to have Sports Minister and member for Moresby South Justin Tkatchenko officially kick off the trials.
He said that because of financial constraints as the Oro Provincial Government were not able to support the Popondetta Rugby League in hosting the event it had been relocated to Port Moresby.
He said only PNGRFL-affiliated leagues were eligible to participate in the three-day trials.
