THE National Souths Basketball League was given a timely boost of K25,000 by the Foe Landowners Association on Sunday to host the 2016 season.

Foe Association chairman Johnny Yawari, son of former Southern Highlands Governor, the late Hami Yawari, in making the presentation, said it was another step in the right direction which symbolised the late Yawari’s love for sport when he was the acting secretary for social services in the province.

“My dad started basketball in SHP when I was a child,” Yawari said.

“In that time, Erave and Kutubu were basketball strongholds and my dad used to lead Kutubu Lakers, while Erave was led by the late Aceoli Andita Pale, who was the coach, and it was interesting to see people uniting as one,” he said.

Yawar said in loving memory of his late dad, he hosted a Hami Yawari Cup in Pimaga village in Sept last year, where hundreds of people from the upper and lower Foe and even the people of Faso came to take part.

“It was a success and at the tournament, we selected our squad to come and compete in NSBL this year in Port Moresby,” Yawari said.

“Sport is something that brought peace and harmony, especially in the area where we come from, and we have come on board to support NSBL.”
