Souths, Defence clash for eighth placing

WEEK three of the second round of matches for the Port Moresby Rugby Football League (POMRFL) will see the Souths (9th) and Defence (10th) vie for the eighth spot in the A-Grade division with only two weeks left before the finals.
Defence open the weekend’s matches today when they play 11th-placed Magani while Souths play cellar dwellers West in Sunday’s main match with the eighth-placed Dobo Warriors on a bye this weekend. Meanwhile, the race for the minor premiership continues this weekend with Kone Tigers sitting on top while Paga Panthers and Butterflies occupy the third and fourth spots respectively.
Kone Tigers play Kone Storm (6th) tomorrow with the Storm confident of a good match following their 12-4 win over Dobo on Sunday.
“We have good number of our regular players who have rested for a week now so we should have them back this weekend for our game against the Tigers,” Storm coach Wilson Mavoko said.
“We’ve proven ourselves defensively so we will be really trying to work out our combinations and get something going for us this weekend.”
POMRFL football operations manager and administrator Meke Maino told The National earlier this week that the top-eight system for the second round would see teams from pools one and two play before the finals.
“For round one, we had a few clubs grab free competition points from forfeits because they were put in pool with teams that did not show up regularly,” he said.
“But now, we’re putting everyone together so at least this makes a difference and we’ll be able to differentiate the sides before finals.”
