PETRO Souths and Besta PNG United fought out a 2-all draw in the Telikom National Soccer League challenge at the Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium in Lae on Saturday.
Besta United fired the opener in the ninth minute through Madang U20 recruit Jamal Seeto who let off a blinder outside the 18-yard straight into the net.
Souths replied minutes later through man-of-the-match Mathias Apo, who proved damaging in attack against his opponents.
As the game carried on both teams tried unsuccessfully to find the net until the 36th minute when Seeto again brilliantly weaved past two defenders and fired a shot outside Souths right hand corner.
Down 1-2, Souths had to pick up the game and with minutes to the break, Apo grabbed the opportunity when he headed a corner kick to again even up at 2-2.
Seeto nearly scored again right on half time after driving past tree defenders with only the goalkeeper to beat, however his shot deflected over the net.
In the second half, several attempts by Petro Souths enforcer Apo were unsuccessful as Besta substitute goalkeeper Junior Matthew defiantly kept Souths strikers frustrated.
Besta coach Max Foster said the overall performance of the boys was tolerable but they needed to keep the momentum after scoring.
“The boys played well but after they scored they seemed to relax, otherwise everyone played well but we could not get past their defence,” he said.
He said with both games against Madang Fox and Tukoko University the boys had slowed down after scoring.
“We had earlier chances both in the first and second half but we gave away too many chances and created a lot of mistakes which is something we need to work on,” he said.
