THE SP PNG Hunters say they were disappointed in releasing second-rower Epel Kapinias but the standards of the team had to be maintained.
The Hunters media told The National yesterday that Kapinias was sacked for breaking team rules during the first half of pre-season training before the Christmas break.
“Epel was released from the playing squad before Christmas for not living up to the values and standards set and expected by the Hunters organisation,” Hunters media said.
“While this is hugely unsatisfactory for both the club and Epel, we wish him all the best in his personal and professional future.”
The Rabaul Guria made his Queensland Cup debut in 2019 and was with the Hunters since.
Kapinias played 30 games and scored three tries for the SP Brewery-sponsored side.
Coach Matthew Church drafted in 2021 Digicel Cup second-rower of the year Nelson Yei, Muruks captain Wesa Tenza and Tigers forward Junior Rop when the team resumed camp last week.
“We have added three new players in to the Hunters squad for the remainder of pre-season: Nelson Yei, Weser Tenza, Junior Rop.
“Coach Matt will be available to comment on this on Thursday post training at the usual media session.”
Meanwhile, the Hunters will be travelling to the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia, at the end of the month.
They will continue to be based at Runnaway Bay for the 2022 season.
