Sparrow crowned minor premiers

THE Sparrows secured the minor premiership in the Port Moresby Netball Association’s premier divison with a 59-40 win over Raukele last weekend.
But it wasn’t smooth sailing for the Sparrows, as Raukele — through Papua New Guinea Pepes captain Jacklyn Lahari — lifted their game to keep within reach of the Credit Corporation-backed side.
Young shooter Alexandria Ligo, who has been a superb for Raukele, kept the Sparrows defence busy throughout the game.
But as the game wore on, the experience and strength of the Sparrows kicked in to seal the 19-point victory.
This season has been good for the Sparrows, with only one loss (to Telstars in round one) and a draw (to the Rebels in round two) to see them finish on top in the seven-team competition after the regular matches.
“We had a great run this season, with seasoned campaigners in Kilala Owen, Courtney Abel, Diane Lahari and Joyce Nao taking the lead and building our future crop of players, which has worked out well so far,” Sparrows president Lawrence Lahari said in a statement.
“Notable inclusion of junior players in the premier division are Louise Maliaki, Mary Leka Jr, Normalisa Dobunaba and Shannaz Apelis, who all started their netball dream 10 years ago with the club.
“It is good to see the fruits of our labour finally coming into fruition now and in the years to come.
“We are building a culture of great athletes not only to benefit their playing ability but their mental application, with emphasis on discipline, fair-play and strong leadership.
“Our growing-talent strategy is achieving the desired results, which is in line with our sponsor Credit Corporation’s aim through their ‘building futures’ brand.”
