Speaker aims to modernise parliament
The National, Wednesday 24th October, 2012
SPEAKER Theo Zurenuoc has assured Papua New Guineans that he is determined to eradicate corruption and restore, reform and modernise parliament.
Zurenuoc told the second sitting of the ninth parliament yesterday: “I wish to inform Papua New Guineans that the National Parliament is in a deplorable state.
“Among the many resultant factors, corruption seems to be the single biggest element responsible.
“The fight against corruption is not an easy one. We are facing a lot of challenges and opposition already and we expect it to be intensified in the coming days.
“But let me assure the people of Papua New Guinea that we will not be moved, we are determined and we will press on to rid this house
of the rot and filth accumulated over the many years of abuse and neglect.”
He said parliamentary service was close to dysfunctional, it had lost direction and purpose for its existence, millions of kina had been spent outside of the purpose while its core functions were left to deteriorate.
