Speaker, stop hypocracy and embrace diversity
The National, Wednesday January 15th, 2014
PLEASE Mr speaker, read the Constitution; nowhere does it declare PNG as a Christian country as it is a myth promoted by ignorant fundamentalists.
The Constitution does, however, honour ancestral wisdom and pledges all Papua New Guineans to guard and pass on these traditions as well as our Christian principles.
In Enga, the speaker said that we must all embrace Christianity, but that goes against the very foundation of the Constitution, which is a wonderful document that celebrates and promotes our diversity, allowing us to believe in whatever we want to.
But the speaker wants all of us to have one belief – his belief.
Then, he praised traditional Engan values, asking leaders to integrate them with Christian principles. You cannot have it both ways; either you value traditions or you do not.
If you do, you have to accept that many of them came about from something quite different from your brand of Christianity.
So quit being a hypocrite and let faith be a private matter, not something for MPs to dictate on us.
Celebrate our diversity, do not destroy it.
