SIX people in Manus have been arrested and charged with wounding another person, police say.
Manus police commander Chief Insp David Yapu said the victim was from Sopasopa within the Lessau area in the Bisikani Soparibeu local level government.
Police alleged that on Nov 27 there was an argument over a fishing area at Sopasopa plantation at Lessau village.
Yapu said the six people, armed with knives and spears, from Jowan One Island travelled by canoe to Sopasopa and attacked the victim.
“One of the attackers Jude Sabajam speared the victim on his right leg causing a serious wound,” Yapu said.
He said the victim was rushed to Lessau health centre where he was treated and the matter was reported to police.
Yapu said all six attackers were arrested and charged and appeared before the Lorengau Committal Court last Monday and remanded in custody.
“We’ve had a lot of incidents reported to us when there was a dispute or arguments, young men resort to using offensive weapons like bush knives, spears or iron rods to attack each other which results in injuries and death,” Yapu said.
He appealed to young men to refrain from using such dangerous weapons as the consequences could easily be serious, especially during the festive season.
“I am appealing to the community and people of Manus to enjoy the festive season as police will be conducting the Christmas and New Year operations.”
