PEOPLE with disability are happy because of the help from family members, Jean Parkop says.
The wife of National Capital District Powes Parkop was addressing people with disabilities and their families during the National Disabled Day celebration at PNG Rehabilitation Centre at Hohola, Port Moresby on Saturday.
Parkop said people living with disabilities were happy when provided with what they needed.
She urged communities in the city to form associations for the disabled people.
“The associations will help lure funds which would be used to provide for their needs. In the past people with disability were regarded as poor and useless,” she said.
“But with an association the disabled can tell their association what they need and how the needs can be provided to them.”
Parkop challenged disabled people not be let down by their disabilities.
She said everyone had a disability. “For instance some of us are physically able but we have a vision problem,” she said.
“You are all human beings no matter the disabilities you have. Tell yourself that you are a Papua New Guinean and with an equal rights as everyone.
“If you can go to school, find a job or do any other activities, then do so. Do not be let down by the disabilities you have. If you cannot come out, you will keep it and as a result it will hold you back.”
from participating equally as others.”
President of PNG Rehabilitation Centre Brown Kapi said: “We need to attack our disabilities with our God-given talents and skills which are our strengths.”
