Special sittings for Buimo jail
The National, Friday March 4th, 2016
THE backlog of court cases involving prison remands at the Buimo Jail will be resolved by having special sittings, Acting Correctional Services (CS) Commissioner Bernard Nepo says.
Nepo told The National yesterday that the issue of overcrowding at the Buimo prison was linked to the issue of backlog of cases.
Nepo, who is faced with a big task of providing a report to the executive government on the mass escape in Buimo last Thursday, said he was looking into the issue of overcrowding at Buimo.
He said he would liaise with the Department of Justice and Attorney-General to have a special judge assigned to specifically fast track cases of remandees at Buimo prison.
“This (backlog of court cases) is one of the things we are looking into,” Nepo said.
“I am aware of the overcrowding problem at the (Buimo) jail and it is not a new issue. We will do what other provinces are doing. We will ask the courts to assign a separate judge to deal with the backlog of cases for the Buimo remandees.”
