THIS year is a remarkable one for Catholic youths of the Archdiocese of Port Moresby who will be marking their silver jubilee this year with the theme: POM Catholic Youths – Remembering, Renewing and Reliving.
In 1987, the youth ministry was formally established by the Oblates of the Notre Dame (OND) Sisters with the election of the first executives of the Archdiocese Catholic Youth Council (ACYC).
Its main objection is to promote human integral development, encouraging them to strive for spiritual, emotional, social, economic and physical growth and independence.
Initially the jubilee celebration was scheduled on July 6-7 to coincide with the Feast of St Maria Goretti, the patroness of youths.
But, due to insufficient funding it was re-scheduled on Aug 31-Sept 2.
The three-day celebration of the “Life-Faith Experiences” of former executives, namely, member for Goilala, Daniel Mona and Clement Waiken, the Caritas PNG coordinator.
The highlight of the silver jubilee celebration was the Holy Eucharist at 10am on Sept 2.
It was presided by Bishop Rochus Tatamai, MSC, Bishop of Bereina diocese and the Bishop Deputy of Youths in Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands.
The culmination of the event was the thanksgiving ceremony to thank the former executives and those who helped the formation and growth of the youth ministry.
Plaques of appreciation were given to them.
