THE Papua New Guinea Sports Foundation board has extended Iammo Launa’s term as acting chief executive officer for another three months.
In a meeting on Wednesday, the board decided Launa continue until their screening committee led by Trevor Birney completed interviewing potential candidates for a substantive appointment.
It is understood incumbent Launa has reapplied for the position.
When contacted yesterday, Launa confirmed her appointment was only for three months.
She could not elaborate further.
A joint press conference by Sports Minister Justin Tkatchenko and Launa scheduled for yesterday was deferred indefinitely.
An email from the sports minister’s office said: “The sports minister wishes to inform the media that the said press has been deferred indefinitely due to procedures yet to be finalised.”
The National was reliably informed that if the PNGSF board went ahead to extend her contract, it may be in breach of Public Service Order.
The PNG Sports Foundation Act does not allow the board to make any acting appointment and it can only recommend to the National Executive Council for such an acting appointment.
That may have been why the joint press conference was deferred.
