THE basic rules of sports can help develop one to become a good citizen in community, an official says.
Mineral Resources Development Company corporate affairs manager Imbi Tagune urged the Hiri Netball Association’s junior netballers to give their best during the four-day tournament when he presented the association K20,000 yesterday.
The games started yesterday and the finals will be played on Monday.
Tagune presented the cheque to Hiri Netball Association president Hanua Hero Varo.
He said such tournaments helped young netballers learn and develop their game before advancing into the senior ranks.
“The young players must learn discipline and to win and to lose, no matter the circumstances. These are the basics of sports life and can extend into everyday living in the community,” Tagune said.
The executive said not only did sports help in the development of the game but also  aided in the holistic development of a person; teaching values such as honesty, teamwork, fair play, respect and adherence to rules.
He said his firm was proud to continue its support in the development of sports and the partnership with Kairuku-Hiri Netball Association into the future.
The sponsorship would go towards food supplies to feed participating teams over the four days.
Varo said she was proud to host the tournament, which attracted 16 associations in the Kairuku-Hiri district.
“Boera association took up the challenge because they wanted to improve the standard of netball at the village level and establish new friendships,” Varo said.
She thanked MRDC and all other sponsors for supporting the tournament.
