A SPORTS administration and soccer refresher workshop is underway in Wewak and will run for a week.
Trainers from the Papua New Guinea Sports Foundation’s Mamose Office are conducting the workshop, which started on Monday, for Sepik Soccer Provincial Association Incorporated.
Taking part in the workshop are association president Edmund Tupui, his senior vice-president, general secretary, and three men and women from each soccer association in the province.
The workshop will coincide with a provincial soccer tournament which will run from Nov 20-25 with the Wewak Soccer Association as host.
Tupui said the purpose of the tournament was to scout young talents for Greater Sepik’s bid for Kumul Petroleum National Soccer League (NSL) inclusion next season.
“The registration fee for teams wanting to take part is K1, 000,” he said.
“We are expecting 30 teams from East and West Sepik. We already have 28 teams confirmed.
“We are confident in moving soccer forward and this tournament will also help us select players for our NSL bid.”
Tupui said East Sepik Governor Allan Bird had helped them with K250,000 to prepare and they were set for the tournament.
He said law and order issues were on the rise in the province and the tournament would help keep youths busy during the festive period.
