SPORTS Minister Justin Tkatchenko is adamant that greater recognition for PNG Rugby League talent is in the horizon.

Tkatchenko, pictured, said this when welcoming the signing of  Kato Ottio by the Canberra Raiders.

“Kato’s signing is a milestone for rugby league and PNG sports,” Tkatchenko said.

“He is a special talent having come from a volleyball star to a Raiders recruit.

“The biggest factor for Kato has been his attitude, to want to learn, train hard and be humble throughout in everything that he has done.

“These are very strong traits in this young man, that must be an example for all our huge talent that are looking for this kind of opportunity,” he said.

Tkatchenko said that since Arnold Krewanty, Bal Numapo and Marcus Bai last played in the world’s top league competition, the huge gap in recruitment from local talent was becoming a concern.

“Questions were asked of what more our players could do to be recognised, to play in the Australian NRL,” Tkatchenko said.

“The biggest factor was getting our house in order first, the National Government, under Prime Minister Peter O’Neill recognised that, and so we as a government had to intervene.

“This was done with the compromise of all rugby league associations. Mechanisms are now in place, from programmes such as the Australian Government funded ‘League Bilong Laif’ and our schools rugby league, to Digicel Cup, to the SP Hunters and then the Team Kumul programme.

“Our players have been granted greater opportunities to grow in the game.”

“We wish Kato the very best over the next two seasons for a place in the top grade.

“He will be a great ambassador for our country, and will do us proud,” he said.
