UNIVERSITY of Technology student leader David Kelma broke down as he described the night a week ago when students from Southern Highlands and Hela were attacked by armed men on campus.
“It was through the help of God many students escaped death. We lost only one brother, the late Graham Romanong,” he said during a funeral service in Mendi last Saturday.
“A university is a place where matured people from different provinces merge and live as a community. But the attack was like a tribal fight,” he said.
Kelma, the Student Representative Council president, told relatives at Momei Oval during the funeral service on Saturday that the Hela and Southern Highlands students at Unitech ran for cover when the group of armed men arrived on campus looking for them on the night of Saturday, June 25.
Three of them, all fellow Unitech students from Enga, appeared in court last Friday charged with murder.
He said trouble had started two weeks earlier when the Southern Highlands and Hela students “in self-defence” injured a man during a student fight in campus. They later found out that he was not a student.
