St Joseph’s holds sports carnival

 ST Joseph’s International Catholic College held its sports carnival at the Murray Barracks oval in Port Moresby on April 5. 

At the end of it all, Hartzer (Blue House) came out winners followed by Marcella (Gold House), Chevalier (Red) and former champion house Carthage (Green) tailed the pack. 

The school this year named the house colours according to some of the people who were founders of St Josephs in 1971. 

Carthage, named after Sr Mary Carthage (OLSH), the first head of St Joseph’s when it was started as a school for the children of expatriate public servants in Musgrave Street in Port Moresby downtown. 

Marcella, is named after Sr Mary Marcella (OLSH), who worked with Sr Carthage and taught at St Joseph’s for many years in the 1920s. 

Chevalier, named after Fr Jules Chevalier (MSC) who started the OLSH sisters and sent sisters to work in PNG in the 1880s. 

Hartzer, named after Sr Marie Louise Hartzer, who together with Fr Chevalier founded the Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (OLSH) and with him sent these sisters to work in Papua New Guinea.
