A MAN was murdered and his body left near the Lae Football Association club in Eriku, Lae, last Saturday night.

Police identified him as Michael Afiroti, 31, of Salamaua in Morobe, an employee of the Super Value Store group in Lae.

Police believed that he was stabbed with a sharp object between 11pm and midnight on Saturday.

The body was discovered on Sunday morning by people passing through the area and alerted police.

Afiroti, who lived at 3-Mile, was heading home after drinking at the LFA clubhouse, police said.

“No suspects have been identified yet,” Lae police operations commander Insp Fred Kaiwa said

“Detectives are working on the case.”

Kaiwa said the motive behind the killing was not clear but he could have been robbed.

This is the second murder case in two weeks.

A 23-year-old Grade 11 student from Gumine in Chimbu was stabbed to death on June 3 at the Voco Point beach-front by thugs who were after his mobile phone.

He said many people fell victims to criminals at night when they ventured out to remote places or alone.
