Stabbing suspects held
THE main suspect wanted for the alleged stabbing of a University of Technology (Unitech) student in Lae last Sunday is in police custody with eight other suspects after they were arrested and detained by Lae police.
Lae Met Sup Chief Insp Chris Kunyanban said the nine suspects were identified as the group that had allegedly stabbed the victim Bradley Vatabu, a second year student in the early hours (around 4am) of Sunday (April 18) morning.
Chief Insp Kunyanban said all nine suspects would be charged once investigations and interviews were completed.
He said criminal investigation division officers were investigating and interviewing the suspects.
Chief Insp Kunyanban said it was unfortunate that a young man, who was studying at university, had lost his life.
He appealed to the family and relatives of the victim not to take the law into their own hands and to let the police and court deal with the case.
“We have a justice system in place that will deal with those responsible and serve justice to them.”
Police reported that the victim was with his sister attending a party and there was fight with others who were not attending the party when he was stabbed with a knife. The incident happened over the weekend in the early hours of the morning around 4am.
Chief Insp Kunyanban said people needed to be more responsible for their actions and not to put themselves in risky situations.
He called on those who organised gatherings to ensure safety of those attending and to take into account where it was being held and not allow the activity to go beyond a reasonable time.
