Stand up against govt for tempering with Constitution

FROM the beginning up until now, the PNC-led government has done more damage than good regardless of the political stability and strong economic growth that we are experiencing today.

After the amendments to the grace period, now there is the controversial UBS loan.

As if that was not enough, it went further to threaten the Ombudsman Commission from freezing the loan payment and warned it not to interfere with the work of the executive arm of the government.

Now, we hear of another proposed amendment on Section 145 of the Constitution on motion of no confidence with the insertion of “where a prime minister is removed in a vote of no-confidence in accordance with this section, a person from the same party invited to form the government after national elections shall be elected as the prime minister”.

This is absolute rubbish and totally undemocratic.

It has nothing good to benefit the country except for power-hungry leaders who can cling onto power for as long as they wish and access public funds.

Past governments, including the Somare government, have played around with numbers to stay in power, which was proper and democratic, but the current government have seen it fit to play around with our Constitution in order to remain in power.

Such action by this PNC-led government is very dangerous whilst setting a bad precedence for future governments.

Where are we going to seek help now?

What is the opposition, the Ombudsman Commission and other agencies like Transparency International PNG (TIPNG) doing to help stop the government from constantly changing and playing around with our Constitution?

Why is TIPNG wasting time walking an empty walk against corruption, which has achieved nothing so far?

Why not stage a joint protest march with our opposition leaders, students and the public to stop the government from tempering with our Constitution week-in, week-out?

Enough is enough; something has to be done now to save this country.
