A POTENTIAL member of the future international PNG Kumuls is in the making in the form of Denzel Haiveta of West Mitchelton Panthers Rugby Football League Club in Brisbane’s Northern Division competition in Australia.
Son of former Gulf governor Chris Haiveta, the 11-year-old Denzel was the pick of the grand final against Brighton Roosters with his bone-rattling tackles and rampaging hit-ups.
It was a fairytale come true for the team.
Entering the game as underdogs against the undefeated Roosters and winning it was something special for Denzel and his teammates.
West Mitchelton RFLC has a colourful and decorated history as a junior rugby league club in Queensland.
It has produced stars such as  Adrian Lam, Paul “Fatty” Vautin, Shaun Berrigan and Michael Hagen.
The grand final between Panthers and Roosters was a typical final, hard fought with both sides giving their all until the final hooter.
The final score of 16-12 to the Panthers attested to the intensity of the contest.
The Panthers held the line and tackled their hearts out with Denzel producing several big hits that brought the crowd to its feet.
The win was a dream come true for Denzel who hopes to one day don the red, black and gold of his homeland.
