LEADING Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc visits Port Moresby today along with former batsman Dean Jones and female representative Alyssa Healy.
Cricket PNG announced the visit on Wednesday with left-armer Starc, Australian women’s wicket-keeper Healy and former Australian test legend, Jones set to help promote cricket in the country.
The cricketing legends will be involved in various events including media conferences, high performance training programmes with the draw card being the Cricket PNG annual gala dinner tomorrow at the Gateway Hotel.
“We’re very lucky to attract Mitchell (Starc), Alyssa (Healy) and Deano (Jones) to PNG this week. To have these high profile international cricketers in PNG will help boost the sport of cricket further,” CPNG CEO Greg Campbell said.
Starc is currently recovering from a foot injury which he sustained on the controversial South African tour earlier this year and was unable to secure his spot for the current tour of the UK. He has played 43 test matches — taking 182 wickets with a batting average of 21.68; 72 One Day International (ODIs) — taking 141 wickets; 22 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) taking 30 wickets.
Starc was a pivotal part of Australia’s Word Cup Victory in 2015, winning the player of the tournament award.
Healy is currently a permanent member of the Australian women’s cricket team, having played three test matches, 58 ODIs and 80 T20Is.
Healy has played a role in the dominance of the Australian team in recent years having won the women’s T20 World Cup in 2010, 2012 and 2014 and the women’s World Cup in 2013.
Jones played 52 tests and 164 ODIs from 1984-94 and was a part of the victorious Australian World Cup winning team in 1987.
Jones was a flamboyant batsmen who averaged 46.55 in tests and 44.61 in ODIs during an era where the mighty West Indies dominated world cricket.
