Start climate change fight at home

Letters

I AM disappointed that we, as a country, are still continuing to allow flaring (i.e the burning off of so-called unwanted gases) of our natural gas at Papa Lealea and at the LNG site in Hela.
I suggest and appeal to the Environment Minister and Prime Minister to consider stopping this nonsense.
We are helping to heat up the environment and planet.
We may utilise the burning of these bi-products of LNG gas in some kind of closed loop circuit and heat up salt water pumped to site near Papa Lealea to produce steam which can be used to run a turbine to produce power.
We can then produce reliable power supply and bring the cost of power down to 2-5 toea per kilowatt.
We can also provide a clean and reliable WHO (World Health Organisation)-standard water supply to Papa Lealea as well as the surrounding areas and even parts of the city and
Also, bi-products of this process is salt.
We cannot continue to preach of climate change and talk in international forums and not put that into practice locally.
We need to think globally and act locally.
