THE National Education Board has closed down Kerevat National High School in East New Britain because of “gross misuse of funds”.
Education secretary Dr Musawe Sinebare made the revelation at the Kerowagi Secondary School in Chimbu during the graduation ceremonies for Grades 10 and 12.
Sinebare said the board decided to close the school because of the “gross misuse of school funds”.
He said he had written to the bank to freeze the school’s account.
He said he wanted the school management to control the funds properly and use money for the purpose it was intended for.
Sinebare said those Grade 10 students who put Kerevat as their first choice next year would be put into other national high schools.
His announcement caught the graduating Grade 10 students by surprise.
But he told them it would not affect their first choice if they put on their school leavers forms for Kerevat.
Sinebare said he wanted good financial management to be practised in every educational institution in the country.
He said when a school management did not know how to control money and spend it wisely, the schools would have no food for the students, no electricity, stationery and other basic items needed to
run a school.
