THE Government will formulate a legislation to manage all forms of compensation, according to Prime Minister Peter O’Neill.

O’Neill said compensation was a concern because people were claiming for almost everything they lost, even the destruction caused by natural disasters.

He was responding to a concern raised by Anglimp-South Waghi MP Joe Koim that compensation had become an industry.

“People claim compensation for deaths, damage to properties whether done by nature or not,” Koim said.

“I am asking if the government has any plans to regulate this (compensation practice).”

Koim said compensation had been coming in all forms and was getting out of hand.

O’Neill agreed that compensation was becoming an industry and it was time to find legislative approaches to manage it.

“We will be giving directions to the Attorney-General’s office to formulate a legislative structure to put forward to this house in the coming months,” O’Neill said.

He said this would regulate the compensation claims with only genuine ones entertained.
