STEAMSHIPS Trading Company (STC) has donated K5,000 towards the Tour Long Malagan cycling competition in New Ireland.
The two-day competition during the Queen’s birthday weekend next month will cover a 170km distance from the Pam in the Namatanai district to Utu High School outside Kavieng town.
This inaugural competition has attracted a great number of riders from around PNG and Australia.
However, some intending participants have been put on a waiting list in case someone pulls out.
Event organiser Stephen Damien said: “We are very happy with the number and mix of participants who have registered. We believe this event, especially the Buluminski Highway, will showcase the potential for major road cycling events in PNG.
“We already have 55 riders registered with another 10 on the wait list because of the limited accommodation at the guesthouses.
“This cycling event is the first one of its kind in PNG that will feature cyclists wearing proper gear – helmets, club colours in Lycra and specialised carbon fibre bicycles.”
Damien thanked STC for the donation and would ensure the company was proud to be associated with the inaugural event.
