THE Steamships Trading Company in partnership with the Motu Koita Assembly has come on board again this year sponsoring the 2019 Hiri-Moale Festival with K100,000.
The presentation of the cheque yesterday by Steamships would go towards the construction of the traditional lakatoi, the iconic vessel which will be the centerpiece of the festival, and includes other activities such as the Hiri-Hanenamo competition.
Motu Koita Assembly chairman Dadi Toka Jr said it was wonderful to see Steamships honouring its close ties with the Motu and Koitabu people through the sponsorship.
Toka said the festival was a flagship event that would showcase the culture of the Motu Koitabu people and highlighted the epic trading voyages of the past.
Steamship chief operating officer Rupert Bray said the company was excited to sponsor the event.
Bray said Steamships’ relationship with the Motu Koitabu people is an enduring one, with many of the Steamships family coming from Motu Koita Assembly community.
“Sponsoring cultural events and preserving rich traditions is something that Steamships takes great pride in,” he said.
He said Steamships had been associated with the Motu Koitabu people since the first day Steamships started operating in country.
