Stingerz take chance against Sisters
The National, Thursday March 27th, 2014
A REVAMPED Stingerz came out victorious on Saturday beating reigning champions United Sisters 15-9 in the Port Moresby Women’s Softball preliminary final.
The big win earns them a crack at the premiership title against Gazelle this weekend.
Veteran hurler Selina Karai continued her rich vein of form producing the unhittable deliveries when they mattered most.
Karai had catcher Nicky Simba as her spotter and their combination was a hard one to counter.
Both will be heavily relied on come the national softball championships in Kokopo next month when the capital city women attempt to win their seventh consecutive title.
Sisters, who found the going tough failed to repeat the batting flare that aided the side belting Bears the previous weekend in the minor semi-final.
Stingerz quickly took advantage of Sisters sloppy fielding to race out to a six-run lead in the first inning.
The match was practically won at that point as Stingerz tightened the screws and never let Sisters back into the contest.
Sisters captain Georgina Mocke lamented her side’s poor fielding as the reason for their demise.
“We just committed too many silly errors in the field and our batting wasn’t good either,” Mocke said.
Sisters lead pitcher Natalie Bart Petalie was not at 100 per cent having carried an injured shoulder into the match.
That lack of fire power may have was also a factor in the early onslaught of runs by Stingerz.
