POLICE in Port Moresby apprehended a suspect last Friday who crashed a stolen motor vehicle into a residence at Gerehu stage 5.
National Capital District taskforce unit commander Inspector Mark Mosinakave told The National that there were two suspects involved and police arrested one at Gerehu stage 3 while the other fled.
He said the suspect had allegedly been involved in criminal activities for a long time.
“We were doing our normal police patrols in the morning around the Gerehu area when we saw the white Toyota Harrier driving out from stage 3,” Mosinakave said.
He said they suspected that it was a stolen vehicle when the driver inside the car saw them and tried to drive away at full speed.
“That was when we started tailing the car trying to stop it but it kept on driving down to stage 5,” he added.
He said when the suspects were corned at Gerehu stage 5, the driver rammed the vehicle into the residence, after hitting three vehicles and a dog on the street.
Mosinakave said luckily no one was hurt.
“The two suspects after crashing the vehicle, left it and fled the accident scene but we managed to catch one of them who is now in police custody for questioning.”
He added that the stolen vehicle belonged to a family from East Sepik but living in Gerehu stage 3.
He said the family was driving out from their house in the morning when the suspect held them up and took the vehicle.
In another case, Mosinakave said his office raided a suspect’s house and found items that they believed had been used for criminal purposes.
