Stone, Wisil line up against quality field in Welsh meet
The National, Thursday July 19th, 2012
TOEA Wisil and Nelson Stone have their final competition in the UK ahead of the Olympic Games this morning PNG time when they run in Cardiff at the Welsh Athletics International.
Stone runs in a 400m field that contains several 45-second runners and will get a taste of what it will be like in the Olympic Stadium in two weeks time.
Toea Wisil will also get a good workout as she lines up against seven other sprinters who have run times of between 11.05 and 11.42 this year in the 100m.
Stone had a confidence boosting 200m run last Sunday at Exeter in southwest England.
Competing at the SW England Championships, he ran 21.38 seconds to record his best time since 30 March, finishing second to a member of Swaziland’s Olympic team who ran 21.24.
It was just what coach Lloyd Way wanted at this stage, to prepare him for the Welsh International 400m race. This was the third visit by PNG athletes to Exeter where Rosemary Turare (Omundsen) and Iammo Launa both set national records in 1993 in the 3000m and Javelin events respectively.
Mowen Boino won the 400m in 48.77 ahead of his final 400m hurdles race of the season at Cardiff where he will be part of star studded international field that includes two time world champion and Beijing silver medallist Kerron Clement.
Boino and Betty Burua will have their last competition before heading home after a very successful season.
For Burua it will be an opportunity to improve her 400m time further as she lines up in a quality field that includes athletes from Kenya, Namibia and Trinidad and Tobago.
