Stop school fights and cult practices

The National, Monday May 12th, 2014

I AM concern over the school fights which are mainly instigated by students in our cities.

The students who are involved in school fights ignore the importance of the national unity.

They also lack social values which are being taught through religious instructions and sporting activities that they are engaged in from grade 1 to 12.

There is something wrong in their education.

Firstly, I sense that the drug and alcohol abuse is beyond control in schools throughout the country.

I believe this is one of the main contributing factors of school fights and cult practices, which are blocking efforts to improve the students’ development to achieve these objectives and goals.

Secondly, tribal fighting was part of our Melanesian culture.

The rival tribes used to fight to gain more land.

These cultural values of fighting charisma still exist today in some parts of Papua New Guineas where there are ethnic clashes in urban centres and tribal fights in the rural areas.

It is obvious that today’s generation is no different and therefore, the tribal behaviour lingers on in the schools.

The government must get the Department of Education to effectively address school fights and cult practices.
