THE Port Moresby Rugby League completed Round 6 matches over the weekend at a dry and dusty Ipi Park, Hohola.

Starting on Friday afternoon, Flame Kone Storm edged out Defence 6-4 in a tight affair with the successful conversion by halfback Mathias Kom proving to be the match-winner.

On Saturday, Dobo Warriors held off Butterflies to win 14-12 in another closely contested affair, after both teams were locked 2-2 at the break.

The second match of the day saw the clash of two big cats in a scrappy match, Kone Tigers came out on top of Paga Panthers 18-12.

And the match of the day saw Porebada village’s Maiari Eagles record their first win in entertaining fashion, beating West 22-14.

West had themselves to blame, having scored first, on the way to leading 10-8 at halftime.

On Sunday, home team Hohola Flies remain the only undefeated side when they claimed the scalp of 2013 grand finalist Brothers 18-12.

With a strong vocal home crowd support, it was a daunting task for the bretheren who did not play as freely as they liked.

In the second match 2013 champions Tarangau proved too strong and far too classy on their demolition of Magani 42-14. Young wing sensation Dadi Boi Was became both a hero and a villain, scoring 18 points from a try and seven goals and getting placed on report for a high shot.

In the main game, Royals proved they are genuine finals contenders in 2014 when they held off second-placed Hanuabada Hawks to win 14-4.

Both teams scored all their points in the opening half as the second stanza proved to be an arm wrestle with both sides displaying some commendable defence, particularly in front of their own try-line.

Following two impressive defensive displays in the past fortnight against Hohola (6-7) and Magani (28-0), the police team kept their famed Hawks opponents to just that single try while they scored two to take the game in a competitive tussle.
