A grade 11 student is fighting for his life at Mt Hagen Provincial Hospital after he was stabbed on Friday morning while on his way to school.
The incident took place at the Enga bus stop at 8am.
He was identified as Jackson Tomo from Porea village in Kompiam-Ambum, Enga.
Three men armed with bush knives followed him from town and attacked him.
During the attack, a bush knife was pierced from his back through the chest and his hip.
Provincial police commander Jacob Kamiak could not be reached for comment.
Tomo’s guardian Jacob Kaka said the attack could be related to tribal differences in Enga.
Kaka said he had taken care of Tomo for 20 years as his own son.
He said what was done in Enga should not be carried on to Western Highlands.
“This is a primitive mentality to take revenge on a foreign soil,” Kaka said,
“I condemned this attack as this boy was innocent.
“I do not understand why people from other province are taking their differences and grievances to another province. Such people must face the law. Mt Hagen is the third city and it is not a place where people can come and retaliate or express their frustration by taking away the life of another person.
“I, as Jackson’s guardian, want justice to prevail and those involved must be punished.”
Kaka said with police intervention Tomo was saved, with one man arrested, while two fled.
